What made you start dressing up like superheroes?
The superhero costuming community is a lot less stressful and petty than the anime cosplay community. And, unlike many convention-goers, I look good in spandex without a girdle.

You say on your MySpace profile that getting into cosplay is one of your biggest regrets. Why is that?
When I first got into cosplay, it seemed natural, because I loved anime and I loved costuming. But after awhile, the tally of my own personal vendettas — and those against me — began to outweigh the reasons I loved participating in the first place. Luckily, I’ve found a community that isn’t territorial and petty, and doesn’t let personal bullshit get in the way of the reason why we’re all here in the first place. Beyond that, it’s nice to not have to worry about being judged for who you talk to, who talks to you, who takes your picture, who else has done the costume you’re doing, people impersonating you, and — I swear to God — whether or not you use a certain color scheme on LiveJournal. Plus, the body odor doesn’t help.

Which of your outfits gets the most attention?
Dark Phoenix. But I’ve got so many more incredible pieces in the works that I’m sure that answer will be changing soon.

What kind of guys are attracted to a woman in costume?
I think deep down — at some point, every man was 13 years old — if you can both appeal to his nostalgia and stir his attraction any guy is capable of fantasizing about a woman in costume.

What was the most unwanted attention you ever got at a convention?
One time, not even in costume, the HNIC of an anime club set about a riot because I was even in attendance.

What was the geekiest moment in your life?
When I bit the head off a chicken — for real.

Tell me about your podcast Just Push Play.
It’s actually the failed leftovers of a television experiment my (now) fiance produced — unfortunately he hired two buffoons who had never worked in television to star as the hosts, and it just spiraled out of control from there. Well, the end result was my co-host and I got a podcast, the producer got a hot chick who likes comics — shake a stick at that! We’re both former radio people: Gary, a music director; I, a syndicated talk-show host. Then on the way to the show one day, we picked this kid CR off the streets. Now we meet every week in The Martini Room Studios and dish out views on topics ranging from video game sales (booooring) to the right-wing media taking over the airwaves. Sometimes we sprinkle news in, but that’s what the Internet’s for. We’re geeks at heart and let our own interests dictate the flow of the show. We’re also very fortunate to be part of a larger media network that works hard to bring good radio to anyone with an open port.

Someone recently asked me what numbers we pull. I shrugged and told him I don’t know — and honestly, don’t care. If I wanted to do this for money, I’d be at Clear Channel. I do this for fun. But why should you listen to Just Push Play out of the trillion other podcasts? Simple, I’m on it!

Now though…I’m a few years older and wiser; I could totally kick the ass out of a television show. And don’t think that I won’t in the near future.

What would a Bizarro version of Ana Aesthetic be like?
Just like me, only with a goatee — so you could tell she was evil.

[Are you a geeky girl? Are you hot? If you answered yes to both of those questions, you could become the next Geek Honey of the Month. Send pics to geekhoneys@blogzarro.com]

Geek Goddess Ruby Rocket has been setting fanboys’ hearts aflutter online since late last year when she was featured on a website I used to co-publish, the GeekZine. Through the Zine (with an assist from digg.com), she came to the attention of Maxim magazine, which featured her on their photo blog. She says the offers have been pouring in and now there are even plans for a Ruby Rocket comic book (read the Q&A for more on that). Ruby says she’s just an ordinary geek who likes to dress up like superheroes and play video games. Just check out the pictures and you’ll see there’s nothing ordinary about her.
Things began to take off for you after I featured you on my old website, the Geekzine. Can I take credit for discovering you?
Sure! Someone’s gotta take credit for it, right?

I hear there’s a Ruby Rocket comic in the works. What can you tell me about that?
Well, it’s being put out by APE Entertainment. In the beginning it’ll be 4-6 one-shots with a “Dial H for Hero” sort of feel: Ruby Rocket trying out different superhero personas. Readers will then get to vote on which will become an ongoing series.

What was it like getting on Maxim’s website?
I was totally shocked when they first emailed me and asked if I could send them photos to use. My mind is still blown that it’s happening to me. It’s weird that I’m so lucky, for a change.

What were some of the stranger or more dubious offers you were getting after the GeekZine feature?
Oh, wow, well…I won’t go into specifics, but let’s just say that certain fetish communities have really taken a liking to me.

You really seemed to have hit a chord with the geeks. Do you have an explanation for that?
Honestly, it might just be because I truly am a geek/nerd/whatever myself. I go into my local comic store every Wednesday and pull my comics out of my box just like others in the fandom, and I do sit in front of the computer or TV playing video games for countless hours. I’m just your average geeky girl who got a few lucky breaks.

Do you get noticed in public from your Internet exposure?
In comic book stores, sometimes, but never just when I’m out day-to-day. I’m definitely nowhere near well known enough to be recognized by Joe Suchandsuch.

You must get harassed by creepy geeks a lot. How do you deal with them?
I wouldn’t say it happens a lot, really. When I do get an email that crosses the line and makes me feel uncomforatable, I’ll just ignore it, usually. But, honestly, it doesn’t happen often.

Which of your costumes gets the most attention?
Black Cat. It’s the kind of the costume I’ve become the most known for.

What was the first superhero costume you ever wore?
Well, dunno if she counts as a superhero by American standards, but the first one I wore was Sailor Moon. I patched it together out of clothes from my dress-up box when I was much, much younger.

How did you get the name Ruby Rocket?
Well, it was a collaboration between my boyfriend and I. People always refer to me as Red, since my hair definitely stands out, but we wanted to go with something a bit more elegant sounding, so that’s where Ruby came from. The Rocket part came from my love of vintage space movies and images and the fact that my head’s off in the stars half the time.

Do you ever get the urge to fight crime while dressed like a superhero?
Oh, no. I’ll leave that to the professionals.

What would a Bizarro version of Ruby Rocket be like?
Probably your completely normal, home-grown girl next door. With a lovely collection of V-neck sweaters, in pastels, and pleated skirts.

She’s a superhero, a schoolgirl and she’s legal! It doesn’t get any better than that, people. Captain Schoolgirl attends Our Lady of Perpetual Bliss, where she protects the innocent and fights bullies, oversexed priests and nuns, and a psycho cheerleader named the Squealer. Sounds like my old high school, except for the sexy Captain Schoolgirl part. Cap is also a double threat in the world of entertainment, as the knee-high-sock-wearing hero stars in live-action movies and a comic (check out a clip of “The Adventures of Captain Schoolgirl” here). She says she likes milkshakes, patrolling school dances, comics, puppies and fellow bookworms. But it was her love of “Cabin Boy” that clinched it for me. But enough of my yakking.
How did you become Captain Schoolgirl?
I came to be out of the desires and wishes of all my professors and fellow students — they needed a hall monitor from heaven and thus I was born. Turns out there is more to worry about in school than patrolling school dances and handing out demerit slips.

What special powers/abilities do you have?
The most fine-tuned human abilities a la Captain America. Extreme intelligence. Spelling whiz. Razor-blade ruler of justice. Martial arts (in training!). Lightning-fast hall-pass writing.

Do you have a weakness?
Puppies, bookworms, midterms, and chocolate. And darklings.

How are you handling the death of Captain America? Do you fear for your own life?
100 bucks says Captain America’s not dead.

Would you care to tell us your secret identity?
What secret identity?

What’s the biggest problem facing Captain Schoolgirl?
The Squealer — cheerleader from hell. She constantly shrieks rumors through her menacing megaphone and it’s time someone stopped her.

Do you have a boyfriend?
There’s no time for flirtations with the amount of exams and papers we have these days. Boys are for study groups, if they can keep their heads on straight. Dunceboy (my sidekick) is the only boy in my life — and he’s too busy shooting spitballs at the Squealer!

Are men intimidated by a superheroine?
Boys certainly are! Men seem to be flabbergasted when I interrogate them. I guess that’s why girls have higher IQ’s.

What is it that makes a schoolgirl uniform so powerful?
It’s the socks. Everyone loves a good clean pair of knee highs!
