Blogzarro Q&A: Geekscape’s Jonathan London
By James A. on April 18th, 2007

If geek is the new cool, Jonathan London is Fonzie. Jonathan launched Geekscape.net, a mega-geek site that’s part social bookmarking, part fanzine, part podcast, on Christmas Day 2006 and has seen the site grow faster than Bruce Banner’s biceps after he gets angry.
As the host of Geekscape’s video podcast, he covers geek culture and gets to interview some of the biggest names in the world (if you consider Lou Ferrigno and David Faustino big…and I totally do). Outside of geekdom, he’s a director, whose credits include music videos for such bands as Reel Big Fish, Hellogoodbye, Reggie and the Full Effect, and The New Amsterdams. His 2004 short “Gay by Dawn” won several film festival awards. And to boot, his little brother is WWE star Paul London, and he coined the mysterious term “funnelfish.” Blogzarro forced Jonathan to take a few moments from his busy schedule for a little thing I like to call the Blogzarro Q&A…
What is Geekscape’s mission?
To explore the Geek-cosmos of movies, video games, music, comics, and more through discussion, community, and collaboration! We want to build a home and community for anyone who has ever gotten excited about something only to look up and find a room full of blank stares or ridicule. At Geekscape, we not only GET what you’re talking about with that vague comic book or movie reference…we celebrate it!
You seem incredibly busy, running Geekscape, directing music videos, and getting beat at Mario Kart DS by 14-year-olds. How do you find the time?
I don’t. I’ve been cloning myself and bending space-time for the past couple of months. Did you see “The Prestige”? I know that the machine in there was fictional, but the design was pretty close. My friend Vijay and I built one over Christmas break. The space-time thing, [my friends] Graham and Gilmore figured out. They killed their first test subject so I’m gonna wait till they get a little further before trying that one. Still, it’s a pretty busy schedule. My comics stack is out of control because I never get a chance to read more than one a day.
Is it hard to score with women when they know you’re a geek?
You’ve just got to find the right ones and be sincere with them. Don’t ever fake the funk, and wear your strengths proudly. You’ve got to be honest with her from the start that this is the way you bring and will continue to bring it. If you scare ‘em off, you didn’t want her anyways. If her eyes get all big and she starts quoting scenes from “Halloween 5″ or telling you about their favorite episode of “Star Trek,” you know you’re good to go. Those girls are definitely out there. Don’t be afraid to ease them in but definitely be honest. I make sure to wear my Daredevil boxers on any date where I think they might be seen by a second party. If she runs away, then whatever. Shrug it off and “back to comics.” If she sticks around, then you’re good to go. Who knows? Maybe she’s got a cool guys-in-tights fetish. I’ve experienced weirder things.

As the brother of a professional wrestler, did you get your ass kicked a lot growing up?
I was probably in one fight throughout grade school and I’m pretty sure it was over Legos that some kid stole from me. Paul definitely got picked on the most out of all three brothers. But he set his mind on something and went after it relentlessly. That’s why I show up every week for the ’scapists and continue to build the audience and community with everyone. I drive a Honda Civic, and the day I got that car in 2001 the first person I drove it to show to was Paul. He was working at Urban Outfitters, and I had just graduated from undergrad. He got really inspired by that and focused on his goal. When I see Paul just six years later wrestling in sold-out arenas and traveling all over the world, I get super-pumped as well and focus even harder on my own goals. We feed off of each other and are there for each other constantly. Two years later Paul was in the WWE. Just goes to show that even if you’re getting your ass kicked, you can use the positive things in your life as focuses to strive towards bigger things. Life can be really hard and really frustrating. But if you focus on goals and the positive things around you, you’re the only person who can hold you back. Wow. I took that funny question and made it all serious. Someone should actually kick my ass for that. I’m pretty sure I deserve it now.
What’s the geekiest thing you’ve ever done?
Geekscape. That’s easy. It’s our goal to undemonize the term “geek.” We celebrate the geek. We celebrate those people who collect every issue of a book. We celebrate everyone who camps out overnight for a new game system. We celebrate everyone who has ever dressed up as their favorite movie character. We celebrate every music fan who has ever hunted down every last limited-edition 7-inch album from their favorite band. This is easily the geekiest thing I’ve ever done because I’m just as obsessed about this audience as this audience is about their own geek passions.
What was the one question you wished you didn’t ask in an interview?
If Stone Cold Steve Austin had ever gone to jail. It was a listener-submitted question and I literally thought I was going to get my ass beat. He was like “Huh?” and I’d obviously offended him. That’s what I get for listening to CERTAIN members of my audience in order to please them. It broke the flow of the conversation and almost got me punched in the face. Just goes to show that I’ll do almost anything for the ’scapists!
Was there ever a question you wished you did ask in an interview, but didn’t?
Not that I remember. Under-talking has never really been a problem for me.
What the hell is a funnelfish?
Those that know the story of the Funnelfish have looked upon a hellish sight so horrible that they question their own humanity. I refuse to lead others down this path of damnation and plead with anyone tempted to ignore my cries to please, PLEASE stifle your anguished wails of torture in the hopes that you will not be heard by innocent ears that will then ask “what the hell is a funnelfish?” and spiral downward into the hell that you have wrought!
What would a Bizarro version of Jonathan London be like?
Jonathan know exactly what Bizarro version not be unlike. But I don’t not-think he would not be weakling. He would not be very strong and cool! Unlike me! (I think that translated to: I don’t know what he would be like. But I don’t think he would be strong. He would probably be weak and uncool. Like me!)
