Geek Honey of the Month: Becky Young

There’s nothing hotter than a girl in an Emma Frost costume — one reason being that there’s no hotter comic book character than Emma Frost. But there’s much more to Becky Young than looking hot. She’s an ambitious, talented video game nut with plenty of projects to keep her busy. But enough of my yakking. Here’s Blogzarro’s Geek Honey of March…

Geek Honey of the Month: Becky Young

Geek Honey of the Month: Becky Young Name: Becky “Aktrez” Young

Age: Old enough to know that girls don’t tell their real age. ;)

Location: Los Angeles

Measurements: 35-26-36 — Size doesn’t matter quite as much as attitude.

Interests: gaming, acting, singing, dancing, cosplay, web design, comics, drawing anime, working out, hanging with my friends

Favorite Costumes: Emma Frost! By far my greatest accomplishment.

Favorite Movies: “Princess Bride,” “The Departed,” “Grease,” “Beauty and the Beast”

Favorite Books & Comics: Emma Frost. “The Dragon Lance” books series. If I ever have a daughter, I’m naming her Laurana.

Favorite Video Games: Currently I’m very much in love with “Gears of War” and “World of Warcraft.”

Heroes: My mom

Hopes/Aspirations: I’m the creator of the Girl Gaming Network. My hope is that it becomes the ultimate place for girls to come and meet other girl gamers. To learn and grow with one another and to go out and be powerful members of the gaming community. Oh, and I want to star in movies and TV!

My Super Power Would Be: Telepathy! I’ve always wanted to know what guys are REALLY thinking.

Geekiest Moment: Spending an hour in PhotoShop taking a picture of myself and creating me as a female Blood Elf from “WoW.”

What obstacles or prejudices have you encountered as a girl gamer?
The biggest obstacle I have had to overcome is that most people believe that I game just to be in the spotlight. Because I am very vocal and also very outgoing about my other hobbies (modeling, acting, etc.) a lot of people assume that I’m using gaming as a means to garner attention. This, to me, is one of the large problems with the gaming community. So many gamers are quick to judge girls based on looks and how they are “seen” to be representing themselves. I think it would be fantastic if people could take some time to get to know girls and find out what they are really about — no matter how they may be “seen” — before judging.

Have you ever had boyfriends who’ve gotten pissed because you were a better gamer?
So far all my boyfriends have been gamers! My boyfriends never get mad if I beat them. They all just swear to get better and come back to beat me. Sometimes they prevail, other times they don’t. I really don’t game to be the “best” and neither do the guys I date. We game just to have fun.

In the early days, it seems, that not many girls were into video games or that girls weren’t as vocal about being gamers. But that’s changing in a big way now. Why?
Back in the VERY early days (Nintendo, arcades, etc.) women were much more into gaming. As gaming evolved, women began losing interest. Many women I have talked to felt that the controls got a little to complex and that most games’ learning curves increased. I think as the “tech” generation is growing up now, you are starting to hear more about girls playing. That’s because the generation that was brought up with video games is now the ones who are in the spotlight. The teens / twenty-somethings are beginning to speak up more about their passion for gaming and therefore it is making the female gamers more prevelant.

With the video-game industry still male-dominated, what types of games or changes would you like to see in order for the industry to attract more girl gamers?
It’s really not about changing the games as much as it is changing the marketing. Girls love “Gears of War” just as much as guys do! The difference is that it’s marketed toward males by making it very testosterone driven and never showcasing girls playing it. If there was one thing I would say that every game should offer, it’s the option to play as a female character.

How do girls’ tastes in video games differ from guys’?
While there are ALWAYS the exceptions, girls tend to gravitate more toward social gaming. For the most part, they also gravitate toward RPGs and puzzle types. When you really get down to it, if a game has great gameplay it will appeal to both genders equally.

Explain the concept behind Video Games Live and your role in it.
Video Games Live is the largest video game touring concert in the world! Imagine a full symphony orchestra performing your favorite video game music while accompanied by lasers, a 30-foot video screen with syncronized video as well as syncronized lighting! It’s like Mario goes to a rock concert! Prior to every concert we have a pre-show festival that features a cosplay contest, game competitions and a great merch counter. After the show we offer (free to every ticket holder) the chance to meet the creators and performers as well as any special guests. In the past, icons like Yuji Naka, Hideo Kojima, Gary Goldman and Don Bluth and more have graced our presence. On March 9th we are performing at the Nobb Hill Masonic Hall during GDC in San Fran. Koji Kondo will be performing and available at our meet and greet after the show! What is my job? Um…EVERYTHING Tommy and Jack can’t handle! :p I am the Event Director. I run the costume event, handle ticketing and so much more!

I know you’re creating an online community for girl gamers. What can we expect from the Girl Gaming Network when it’s launched?
A social community for girl gamers. It will offer a place to voice your opinion and connect with other girls who share your interests. Of course we aren’t BANNING guys! Guys are more than welcome to sign up on the site and also post on the forums. That being said, it IS the girl gaming network so we want to keep the focus on the ladies. It will be a place where girls can come together and just…well…be girls!

So, what other projects are you involved in? How do you find time for gaming?
Aside from GGN and VGL, I also host two radio shows (one online and one on Maxim Radio), freelance for the ECA (www.theeca.com), consult on a few games for Acclaim, and also try to work in my acting. As you can see I’m a VERY busy girl! Therefore, while I always find a way to game, it does cut down on my gaming time. I usually try to find the time to game for at LEAST an hour every night. I also try to make up for lost time on my weekends. ;)

Try and stop me from getting to my comic on Wednesday, I even have 3 other stores on speed dial just incase my pics aren’t in… I have about 15 thousand comics in my basement.
Gaming rules…. I am all about the Wii now and waiting for the next comic con!

  2. Ryan Says:

I’ve known Becky for a while now and believe me she’s the real deal. She knows her games. She’s also very passionate about her work and yes very vocal. Which makes her an easy target. That hasn’t stopped her though. It’s only made her stronger.

In some ways she’s like a modern day Susan B. Anthony and this is her Women’s Right Movement. Woman’s Game Movement. I say more power to her and all my fellow gamers. As long as they realize gaming is about having fun. Not bad mouthing and trying to be better than everyone else. Then it’s not fun anymore.

  3. NewsToob Says:

  18. gobo Says:

Women define themselves through their men. Notice how girl gamers don’t have a history of playing games? If the next boyfriend was into hockey, then she becomes associated with anything hockey. Women really don’t have hobbies. I wish there were more girl gamers out there, but it isn’t the case.

  19. Jason L. Says:

Girls can be gamers too… Check
Beautiful Girls can be gamers as well… Confirmed
Hot girl dressed up like Emma Frost, is a gamer, and possibly an average normal human being… DOES NOT COMPUTE! ERROR!

Definately like what I hear though. Send me an email if you ever want to talk games, Becky.

    I’ve always admired girl gamers.

  20. Matt Says:

“She’s hot, where’s the beer, nice boobs, she’s hot, time for a scratch, nice butt, where are the chips, she’s hot, ok, my turn, hand me the controller”.

Straight to the point. no sugar coated flying unicorn happy horse shit. MATBW

  21. Jason Says:

She really isn’t that hot she kind of looks like a girl I went to college with and she was a complete weirdo. And there were a few instances where two or three dudes ran a train on her. Thats funny if i had a few beers in my though, i would probably hit it

  22. Michelle Says:

    Becky,

I have got to know where you got the boots. This outfit is PERFECT for a photoshoot I have coming up.

And yes hot gamer girls exist…but we are a bit vain with our characters, HAHA! For instance, after 3 years of playing an undead priest Mishkavi, I completely redid her when the blood elves started in BC. I now play Luminia on Shattered Hand, though I co-run a guild of about 460 members (BEER and yes it has a meaning, Battle Evil Elven Rule). My parents never updated me on the latest technology growing up, but I played every game my hands could get on regular old GameBoy. And to this day nothing will beat Zelda.

And don’t knock flying unicorns, I would love to have one in game, though I will have to keep trucking for a pink phoenix.

Did I mention I like football and love porn? Ok, ok, football was started by my boyfriend. But the porn and games? Nope that was all me. Trust me I had to practically drag him into a strip club because I wanted to see one.

  23. Justin Says:
